Distributing in california

Are you thinking about bringing your beers to California?

In addition to finding the right method for distribution, there are many things that need to be considered.

If you are out of state, be sure to check with the local ABC office to ensure that you have learned all the local policies. https://www.abc.ca.gov/index.html
There are so many questions that come up, its important that you have a resource to answer all of your legal questions.

When deciding to sell beer in California like all states it is important that you have labels and keg collars that are updated according to the state laws. The TTB is a great resource for many of these questions. Some useful links include but are not limited to: https://www.ttb.gov/beer/index.shtml

California has more than 710 breweries in operation in the state and that number is growing daily. Having a plan to be noticed in such a crowded segment is key, especially when coming from out of state. In addition to partnering with a great distributor that specializes in the craft industry, we recommend having a brewery representative in the field as often as financially possible. A great distributor will represent you well, but we have noticed that the partnerships that are a combination of brewery employees working closely with a distributor tend to have the most success, especially when introducing a new brand to a highly competitive environment.

In addition to brewery representatives, another way to stay in touch with the local craft beer environment and to make sure you have a pulse on the trends in the area that you are breaking into is to read the local publications and craft news. Every moderate size city has their own well know publication that tells a great story of the growth of craft in that city. In San Diego, CA we recommend local craft publications, WestCoaster, The San Diego Reader, and San Diego City Beat., but surely a quick google search will help you find the ones relavant to the area that you are embarking on.

California, like many states holds hundreds of beer events in and around most counties. We recommend that you are up to date with the local beer events that can help introduce your brand to the market. The California Craft Brewers Association website is a great resource for local events, and your distributor should be able to help you stay upto date on local events.http://www.californiacraftbeer.com/ccba-events/upcoming-events/
